San Diegans “Uncork Their Support” for Serving Seniors

May 15, 2015 - Serving Seniors

We are thrilled to announce this year’s Experience of a Lifetime event raised a record breaking $460,000 in support of our Senior Nutrition Program! Together we raised enough to serve more than 160,000 nutritious meals to low-income seniors who might otherwise go hungry. Fundraising events like these come and go in one swift, fun filled evening but the hope is that the impact goes far beyond the event itself, and in this case it most certainly will.

This year’s theme of “Uncork Your Support” incorporated fine wine and intricately crafted foods prepared specially by Chef Tommy DiMella. The renowned Del Mar Country Club was bustling with guests vying for exciting auction items and sipping wines from various regions of the Californias.

The population we serve is often disregarded and forgotten, but on May 7th the spotlight was on them; bottles were popping and paddles were waving emphatically for our seniors. Kathy, one of our longtime clients, candidly shared her story of fleeing Iran for safety only to face homelessness right here in San Diego. Today, Kathy is a university professor and she credits Serving Seniors for getting her back on her feet and supporting her through some of her darkest and most difficult times. Kathy’s story was a powerful reminder that the real reason 300+ people were gathered under one roof was not actually for exceptional wine and food but for seniors like Kathy who desperately need the help Serving Seniors provides.

This was our second annual Experience of a Lifetime event and the most successful fundraising event in Serving Seniors history! We have fabulous sponsors, donors, guests and volunteers to thank for this success as well as the Gary & Mary West Foundation for so generously offering to match all proceeds from the evening. We could not have done it without our title sponsors, SDG&E and Sempra, and all our incredible supporters – thank you!
