On a special Wednesday evening, owner Guido Nistri of Little Italy’s Bencotto and Monello Restaurants brought a fine dining experience to 128 seniors at Serving Seniors’ Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center. The event included linen tablecloths, live jazz music, and a three-course gourmet Italian dinner. Seniors who are accustomed to cafeteria-style lunches were treated to melanzane alla parmigiana (eggplant parmigiana, followed by lasagna Monello, and a traditional tiramisu for dessert. Each course was plated on-site by with special garnishes by Chef Fabrizio and delivered by volunteers who became wait staff for the evening.

“I wanted to dotiramisu something in my own community that supports the theme of Feed the Planet,” said Guido. Feed the Planet is this year’s theme at Expo Milano 2015, which takes place in Guido’s home town of Milan, Italy. The Expo Milano 2015 movement provides an opportunity to reflect upon, and seek solutions to, the contradictions of our world. The theme of “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” is reflective of the two extremes of hunger seen in the world today; where one side is in danger of malnourishment and the other faces the brutal consequences of overindulgence.

Owner Guido Nistri and the rest of the Monello team found a way to contribute to the movement with their work in San Diego. When Guido contacted City Council and inquired about a deserving local organization for an Italian dinner, Serving Seniors was recommended.20150819_183357_resized

Seniors at the Wellness Center could not have been happier. As they indulged in double-size servings from their typical cafeteria fare, the seniors joked about their special night out with their community of friends.

Inside the kitchen, a different sort of happiness was evident. Guido — with his wife Valentina, Chef Fabrizio and niece Rebecca — could see what a difference they made in one evening. The event was so successful that Guido plans to make this a quarterly event. That is something to cheer about. Saluti!
