Show your support for senior meals program by contacting your elected officials.  

The across the board spending cuts known as sequestration officially took effect on Friday, March 1 after bills to avert the cuts failed in the Senate. The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released implementation details on sequestration which detailed the final cuts to programs, including the following:

• $75 million cut from the Administration for Community Living
• $23 million cut from Community Service Employment for Older Adults
• $117 million cut from Social Service Block Grants

Older Americans Act Senior Nutrition Programs are impacted. Here is the breakdown of cuts:

• Nationally, 17 million meals
• San Diego County – 100,000 meals
• Senior Community Centers – more than 32,000 meals

Paul Downey, Senior Community Centers President/CEO, says, “The lack of resolution in the Sequester is devastating to the millions of seniors who rely on nutritious meals to keep them healthy and independent. The really sad thing is our own elected leaders are causing this pain and have absolute power to stop it. If you haven’t already, call your member of Congress. Tell them that ‘we the people’ see the dysfunction and are so over it. Tell them to do what’s right, and get a deal done that protect vulnerable seniors and all the others impacted by these cuts.”

I am urging you to protect senior nutrition programs from the sequester ordered on March 1. Sequestration will eliminate over 100,000 meals for seniors in San Diego and 4 million meals nationwide. The impact of the sequester could be far greater than lack of nutritious meals for a vulnerable population who is often more isolated and in the greatest economic or social need. Frequently, the meal that is provided through senior nutrition programs is their only guaranteed source of nutrition each day. • Senior Community Centers will lose approximately 32,000 meals because of the sequester • These meals keep seniors healthy, which allows them to be independent which reduces ER visit, hospitalizations and can delay or eliminate the need for long-term care. • Cutting meals is penny-wise, pound-foolish. The longer term impact of these cuts could be that some of these older adults will end up in hospitals and or nursing homes due to health issues related to the failure to maintain a proper diet. This, in turn, will add significant costs to Medicare and Medicaid at a time when efforts are being made to reduce these costs. We should be investing in these valuable nutrition programs as a means to avoid increasing federal expenditures, not cutting back on them when they are needed most. We hope you will insist to exempt senior nutrition programs from sequester to avert a human tragedy which will befall some of the most vulnerable individuals in our society.
