Key Issues
Low-income older adults with limited resources often have no voice when it comes to legislation that will improve their standard of living.
We aim to lead through our network, Seniors First San Diego™ in addressing the needs of seniors through our advocacy efforts in public policy. Our current key issues are:
- Fiscal Cliff or Sequestration
- Elder Economic Index
- Older Americans Act Reauthorization (2012)
- Older Americans Act Appropriations
Past Advocacy Activities
In December, we launched a paper plate campaign to advocate the importance these meals play to the health and wellness of older adults; and in hopes that our elected officials would work together to prevent the Sequestor. Over 4 days we collected more than 1000 plates from older adults through SCC’s congregate nutrition sites and home-delivered meal programs. Assembly Bill 138, The Elder Index
Over two days in July 250 seniors addressed the shortcomings of the current measurement of poverty. These seniors contributed their stories to show support for Assembly Bill 138, The Elder Economic Planning Act . We hand-delivered these letters to Senator Kehoe. In August, the Senator voted to move the bill to the floor. October 9 Governor Brown signs AB 138, The Elder Economic Planning Act of 2011 into law.
