National Nutrition Month
March 22, 2017 - Serving Seniors
National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.
The theme for 2017 is “Put Your Best Fork Forward”, which acts as a reminder that each bite counts. Making small changes in our food choices to make healthier decisions can have a lasting impact on our overall health and well-being. Being conscience about our health is especially important for older adults whether you are planning meals to prepare at home, joining us at one of our congregate dining sites or looking to become more active, Serving Seniors has your resources!
At Serving Seniors we strive to “Put Our Best Fork Forward” by offering many resources for seniors to stay healthy:
- We serve meals at 10 congregate dining site that include a variety of healthful foods.
- Hold cooking classes to help prepare seniors for healthy cooking on a budget at home.
- Nurse Case Managers meet with seniors to help manage weight and other health-related needs.
- And we have a variety of exercise activities to enjoy and be physically active most days of the week
Check out our website for more information about the classes, meals and nurse case management we offer for seniors to stay healthy!
Seniors fight for Healthcare
March 17, 2017 - Serving SeniorsThis morning at the West Senior Wellness Center seniors, advocates, elected officials and senior organizations came together to fight for Healthcare and the rights of seniors. The proposed cuts to the Healthcare system will disproportionately negatively affect the senior population. Shirley Ruiz, a senior who relies on MediCal and in home assistance said it well “Together we seniors have a voice and we say no to healthcare repeals!”
You can make a difference, be an advocate for yourselves and those in your community. Contact your elected officials to have your voice heard about the issues that matter to you. Stay tuned for a new program from Serving Seniors on the many ways you can become an advocate, workshops will be happening all over San Diego county in the coming months.
Thank you to Justice in Aging and Assemblymember Todd Gloria for standing with us today and fighting for the rights of seniors!
National Employee Appreciation Day
March 3, 2017 - Serving SeniorsToday is National Employee Appreciation Day and Serving Seniors is proud to have a hard working staff that is dedicated to helping San Diego’s seniors live healthy and fulfilling lives. Without this amazing team of passionate individuals we would not be able to serve the thousands of seniors who walk through our doors each year.
Serving Seniors currently has over 12 staff members who have been with our team for over 10 years! Three, who have been leaders in this organization for over 20 years: Food Service Director Dianne Sanders-Bradley (25 years), President/CEO Paul Downey (22 years) , and HDM Social Service Case Manager (20 years).
We applaud the hard work of every single staff member and truly appreciate the heart and soul they all give to make this organization a family and support system to so many San Diego seniors.
