Hidden Hungry

September 25, 2015 - Serving Seniors

Not every senior in San Diego will have enough to eat today.

Do I pay rent or buy food? No senior citizen should have to ask themselves this question.

And yet it happens in San Diego every day.

Many seniors live on just $850 per month and have to pay $700 to live in a single room downtown. After paying rent, they must live on about $5 per day to cover all expenses. By the end of the month, many seniors are eating just one meal a day. We don’t think any senior should have to suffer.

At Serving Seniors, we provide a nutritious breakfast and lunch for the most vulnerable elderly men and women in our county every day. This works out to be 2,300 meals daily … 365 days a year. More than 500 of those meals are delivered to home-bound clients. These are seniors who cannot get out to senior centers due to health ailments or are isolated from their community.

James Hamill appreciates the nutrition in his home delivered meals and had started eating fruits again.

“Without Serving Seniors I would be up a creek without a paddle,” says Isobel Watson, who has Parkinson’s Disease. “I don’t have much money. Sometimes I feel like I am one step away from being homeless on the street.”  The home delivered meals make it possible for her to put her limited funds toward her medications and rent.

We provide care for seniors in a dignified, compassionate community setting … so they don’t have to make the agonizing choice between food, shelter or health care. We are privileged to provide a safety net for seniors who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in poverty with nowhere left to turn. We couldn’t do it without your support.

Your kindness also touches the lives of seniors like James… with no family or friends, he lives in a single room in downtown San Diego. But his room had no refrigerator or microwave. He was receiving home-delivered meals, but had to decline the meals his driver Kimberly brought to drop off on Friday for the weekend. So we took extra steps to find James a small fridge and microwave. He was so grateful when Kimberly showed up with his new appliances and fresh meals for Friday, Saturday and Sunday!

This is the dedication of going the extra mile for seniors that you can count on when you contribute to Serving Seniors. We also help them find affordable housing, connect with social workers and nurses, and help them with transportation. But most of all, we give them the feeling of family. They know someone cares and will listen to them when they’re down. They know they can rely on us to be there for them whenever they need us.

No senior citizen should have to choose between food and shelter. With your help, that won’t have to make that choice. Thank you for supporting Serving Seniors and donating today.
