The Wellness Center Celebrates 5 Years!

April 10, 2015 - Serving Seniors

The Gary & Mary West Senior Wellness Center celebrated its five year anniversary this past Wednesday with cake and a visit from Gary and Mary themselves. Seniors flooded the dining room in anticipation of the celebration and there wasn’t an empty seat left in the house.

For many of our seniors, the Wellness Center has become a second home and the staff and other clients have become family.  Many take pride and ownership in the Wellness Center as it has become a fundamental aspect of their lives.  They come for breakfast and lunch and in between they take classes, participate in activities, surf the web at the Cyber Café, visit with their case manager or meet with a nurse.

The anniversary celebration felt more like a birthday party for a dear friend because that is what the Wellness Center represents for many of our seniors. We are proud and honored to be such a central part of the lives of so many seniors in San Diego.

Meet Chef Tommy!

April 2, 2015 - Serving Seniors

We are thrilled to have Chef Tommy DiMella from the Del Mar Country Club create an exclusive, mouth-watering menu with fine wine pairings for our upcoming Experience of a Lifetime event benefiting our Senior Nutrition Program. He will take attendees on a culinary adventure as he shares his creative insight on each course.

Originally from New Jersey, Chef Tommy was raised in an Italian household where food was paramount. “A meal was not just substance,” he explains, “it was and still is a gathering of friends and family sharing experiences and laughs over food made from scratch.”

Chef Tommy has been cooking for over 20 years now using all types of cuisines from different parts of the country. His travels have given him a deep understanding of depth of flavors and purity of ingredients. DiMella says, “I like my food to be composed of light, clean flavors and pure ingredients steeped in seasonality.” We sincerely appreciate Chef Tommy’s use of seasonal ingredients and his focus on fresh food as we serve healthy meals to low-income seniors 365 days a year.

DiMella has a great understanding of what the San Diego community enjoys eating and what boundaries can be explored and pushed. It will be quite exciting to see what creations he dreams up and which boundaries he pushes come May 7th!  Funds raised from this evening will help us continue to fight senior hunger with our nutrition program.
